How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Chevy Corvette

The Chevy Corvette has an electric fuel pump so you should check its fuses and relays and ensure you have fuel before performing the more difficult task of inspecting it. If your vehicle still has difficulty getting fuel you may need to clean or replace the fuel pump. The Chevy Corvette comes in a variety of styles and trim levels that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel pump kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which fuel pump your Chevy Corvette will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. The first generation Corvette was made from 1953 to 1962 and was made with 235 cubic inch (ci), 265 ci, 283 ci and 327 ci engines. The second generation Corvette was made from 1963 to 1967 and the base model had a 327 ci engine with options for 396 ci and 427 ci.

  • Look at engine sizes for later generations of the Corvette. The third generation covers 1968 to 1982 and the base model had a 5.7 L engine with 7.0 L or 7.4 L engine available as options. The fourth and fifth generation of Corvette was made from 1984 to 2004 and came only with a 5.7 L engine, but it was available in many different types and configurations.

  • Check the engine size for the current Corvette. The base model has a 6.0 L LS2 engine for 2005 to 2007 models, and base models after 2007 have a 6.2 L LS3 engine.

  • Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and drain the fuel tanks. Disconnect the negative battery cable, remove both rear wheels and the fuel tank shield.

  • Mark the fuel lines so that you can identify them during installation and disconnect the quick connect fittings from the fuel sender. Unplug the electrical connection for the fuel sender and remove the fuel tank strap while supporting the fuel tank.

  • Remove the fuel pump bolts with a socket wrench and discard them. You may now remove the fuel pump and retaining clip for the float arm. If your fuel pump is on the left side of the car, you will also remove the float arm. Remove and discard the gasket for the fuel pump.

  • Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit and be sure to replace the fuel strainer and gasket. Tighten the break away attaching bolts on the new fuel pump until the upper portion shears off. Use a torque wrench to tighten the attaching bolts for the fuel tank strap to 18 foot lbs.
