Toyota Camry Basic Repair & Maintenance

It is important to maintain or schedule necessary repairs on the Toyota Camry's engine and transmission. The engine, which is the vehicle's heart and keeps the car running, and the transmission, which operates the car's gear speeds, are the most important parts to maintain since they can determine the lifespan of the vehicle. Refer to your owner's manual for instructions and tips on how to maintain your Camry's performance.

Engine

  • Maintain engine oil levels. According to the 2009 Camry Owner's Manual, have your oil changed oil every 5,000 miles or six months (whichever comes first) by a professional lube station. Between oil changes, use synthetic oil, which is most preferred on the Toyota Camry, because it provides extra protection for long distance drivers. Other recommended engine lubricants are 5W30. Apply engine oil when the engine is at its coldest. You will get the most accurate reading from a cold engine. Determine whether oil needs to be changed if its level is below dipstick line.

Transmission Fluids

  • Change the Camry's transmission fluid every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to prevent an overheated transmission. Put the car in park and start the engine. Always run the car during to change the fluid to get accurate measurements. Open the hood, and read the transmission's dipstick levels; if transmission fluid is black instead of red, drain and replace fluid. Apply emergency brakes and block tires to prevent movement to begin draining. Disconnect the cooling line from the transmission to the radiator. Connect rubber tubing to the pipe, attaching the tube's end to an empty jug. Let the engine run idle; allow transmission fluid to flow from the cooling line into the jug.

Turn off the engine when draining slows. Remove and clean the drain with new transmission fluid. Replace the filter and gasket, and reinstall the pan. Check with the Camry's owner guide to determine which transmission fluid is best for your car's year. Dispose of old materials immediately. Reconnect the cooling line to the radiator.

Auto Repair

  • Stick with the original manufacture's Camry parts when repairing or replacing vehicle parts. You can visit the Toyota Camry Repair and Maintenance site to determine your vehicle's maintenance requirements. Have the Camry inspected annually by a professional auto shop. Note that special parts, such as the Camry's transmission, brakes, steering and suspension, need professional repair or maintenance at fast lube garage. Pay attention to the Camry's icon signals; if the icon turns yellow or red, have the problem serviced immediately to avoid major car problems later.
