How to Replace the 3rd Brake Light on a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer

You should replace the high-mount brake light on your 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer as soon as possible if you notice that it is not working. Driving with a malfunctioning brake light can put your family at risk of an accident when slowing or stopping. The light is easy to access from just inside the rear hatch, and requires only common household tools to change. The replacement light assembly is a specialty part and is only available at Chevrolet dealerships.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open the back hatch of your Trailblazer. Pull the retaining pins from the outer edge of the rear section of the headliner. Pull the headliner back out of the way.

  • Pull the wiring harness out of the connection for the high-mount brake light. Pull the rubber grommet from the body of the light.

  • Close the rear hatch of the truck and open the rear window glass. Support the glass completely to keep it open while you work. Remove the retaining screws from the window molding using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the light assembly out of the truck. Insert the new light into the mounting point. Install the two retaining screws. Close the rear window glass.

  • Raise the rear hatch of the truck. Install the rubber grommet around the brake light assembly. Connect the wiring harness to the new light.

  • Reattach the headliner using the retaining pins. Push the pins into place by hand. Close the rear hatch and test the function of the brake light.
