How to Remove the Stock Stereo From a 2001 Honda Civic

Like anything else in or on a car, the factory car stereo can break. And if you want to listen to the radio again, you'll have to remove the broken unit and replace it with an aftermarket model. Alternatively, maybe you want to change out the old stereo to install a new one with better features. This job isn't complicated, takes about 15 minutes to remove the stereo itself and can be done with basic hand tools. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2001 Honda Civic, but the process is similar for other years of Civic as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Hook tool
  • Disconnect the trim panel around the parking brake panel by pulling it up to remove the clips that hold it in place. Unscrew the Phillips-head screws on the side of the console using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Move the center console back toward the rear seat as much as possible.

  • Unscrew the two Phillips-head screws located underneath the power outlet panel using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull out the power outlet panel using the hook tool, then unplug the wiring in the back and set it to the side.

  • Place the hook tool between the bezel around the radio and the dashboard and pull it toward you to release the clips holding it in place. Pry the rest of the panel off of the dashboard. Once the panel is off of the dash, disconnect the electrical harnesses on the back of the deck and a/c controls using your hands.

  • Remove the screws holding the climate control knobs on the left side of the bezel off of the bezel using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Then unscrew the radio from the brackets on the sides of the bezel using the Phillips-head screwdriver.
