How to Install an Apexi RSM

The Apexi rev/speed meter (RSM) is an easy to read data display compatible with a large number of different import vehicles. The Apexi RSM provides a driver with a host of real time figures related to the vehicle's performance, including engine RPM, vehicle speed, travel distance and battery voltage. The Apexi RSM is also capable of measuring G forces when the optional G force sensor is connected to the unit. The RSM unit connects to the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU) and comes with all of the hardware needed for installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire stripper
  • Wire cutter
  • Wire crimpers
  • Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal so that no damage is done to the RSM unit or the vehicle during the installation process. After disconnecting the battery, plug the wiring harness provided with the RSM unit into the back of the device.

  • Locate the vehicle's ECU unit. Consult the vehicle's owner's manual or for the specific location of the vehicle's ECU. Take care when locating the unit, because the location of the ECU differs depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

  • Match the wires from the RSM unit harness with their corresponding ECU wire. The red wire from the RSM unit connects to the ECU's power wire, while the black wire from the RSM unit connects to the ECU's ground wire. The yellow RSM wire attaches to the ECU's RPM wire and the purple wire from the RSM unit connects with the ECU's speed wire. Consult the diagrams at the back of the Apexi installation manual for the exact location of each wire in the ECU harness.

  • Splice into the appropriate ECU wires by stripping 5 mm of wire from the ECU wire and stripping 10 mm from the RSM wire. Wrap the RSM wire around the stripped portion of the ECU wire, then crimp the splice after placing it over the connection. Wrap the finished connection in electrical tape.

  • Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal to complete the installation process.
