How to Snorkel Holley Carb

For serious 4-by-4 enthusiasts, snorkels are a necessary upgrade. If you plan to drive through water that is more than a foot deep, or through particularly hot and dusty conditions, a snorkel can help to extend the life of your engine. Otherwise known as a raised air intake, they are intended to supply cleaner, colder air rather than allowing you to drive underwater. Properly sealed snorkel builds will allow you to ensure only clean air outside of the engine compartment reaches the engine, allowing it to run better, stronger and longer.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC tubing, 2 to 4-inch diameter
  • PVC elbows, diameter that will match PVC piping
  • Rubber pipe adapter, one end same diameter as air intake nozzle, on end same diameter as PVC pipe
  • Plastic cement
  • Adjustable pipe clamps
  • Mounting hardware
  • Screwdriver
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Jig saw with metal cutting blade
  • Select the location where you wish the pipe to exit the engine compartment. Most people have the pipe exit through an unobstructed area of one of the front fenders, near the windshield. It would be best to have the pipe exit on the side closest to the air cleaner to make for an easier installation.

  • Connect the rubber pipe adapter to the air cleaner housing hat which will be connected to the Holley carburetor. Tighten using a pipe clamp.

  • Cut an appropriate length of PVC pipe. One end will connect to the rubber pipe adapter from Step 2, the other end should reach the inside wall of the chosen fender. Use PVC elbows if a straight path can not be routed.

  • Mark and drill a pilot hole through the selected fender and cut out a hole for the PVC pipe, 1 inch larger than the PVC pipe using the jigsaw. Applying masking tape around the area you will cut prevents your vehicle's paintwork from getting scratched.

  • Connect a PVC elbow to the PVC pipe under the hood, extending through the hole in the fender, with the other end facing the direction you wish to direct the snorkel.

  • Attach another length of PVC pipe into the PVC elbow extending through the fender. Cut this pipe to the length desired, or such that it will reach the top of the windshield.

  • Mount this pipe firmly to the vehicle using some mounting hardware. There are many options for how to do this, one of which would be to use pipe strapping around the PVC pipe, secured to the fender using metal screws.

  • Add a tip to the snorkel. You want to prevent rainfall from entering the pipe, this can be attained by employing a commercially produced snorkel tip, or by using PVC elbows to direct the top of the pipe downwards. As you've connected the pipe adapter to the air cleaner, another air filter is not necessary. If connected directly to the carburetor air intake, an air filter could be connected to the top of the snorkel instead of a down pipe, but would need to be waterproofed.
