How to Cut Honda Springs

If you want to lower your Honda, you can either install new lowering springs, or you can cut the stock springs. By cutting the springs, you cause the spring to lose carrying capacity, and in the process, lower the car. Cutting the coils this way takes some trial and error, but it is an inexpensive way to get the job done. This process should take about two hours to do correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire wrench
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Hex-head key
  • Spring strut compressor
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Permanent marker
  • Angle grinder with 4-1/2-inch metal cutting wheel
  • Eye protection
  • Hearing protection
  • Work gloves
  • Lift the Honda using the jack and put jack stands underneath the jack points on the car so all four wheels are off of the ground. Take off the wheels with the tire wrench.

  • Open the hood and then sit in front of the front suspension. Unbolt the front strut wishbone from the lower control arm with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Unbolt the brake line and the bottom of the strut using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the strut from the strut tower in the engine bay using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and remove it from the suspension.

  • Install the coil spring compressors onto the strut and tighten them using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Remove the cap on the strut with an open-end wrench and a hex-head key. Take off the strut cap and remove the strut compressors with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Mark the coil spring where you want to cut it using the permanent marker count the turns of the coil as reference. Wear work gloves, hearing protection and eye protection. Cut the coil spring with the angle grinder. Reinstall the spring into the strut with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket and the spring compressors, then reinstall the strut cap with a hex-head key and an open-end wrench. Reinstall the front strut in the suspension with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench, going in the reverse order of dismantling.

  • Sit in front of the rear suspension. Unbolt the bottom of the strut from the lower control arm with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then open up the trunk. Peel back the carpeted panel on the trunk sides and unbolt the top of the strut from the strut tower using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take the strut out of the suspension.

  • Install the coil spring compressors onto the strut and tighten them using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Remove the cap on the strut with an open-end wrench and a hex-head key. Take off the strut cap and remove the strut compressors with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Mark the coil spring where you want to cut it using the permanent marker. Put on the work gloves, hearing protection and eye protection, and cut the coil spring with the angle grinder. Reinstall the spring into the strut with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket and the spring compressors, then reinstall the strut cap with a hex-head key and an open-end wrench. Reinstall the rear strut in the suspension with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench, going in the reverse order of dismantling.

  • Reinstall the wheels using the tire wrench. Lower the Honda off the jack stands using the jack.
