How to Make a Wind Blocker for a Miata

Driving your Miata with the top down can generate some significant wind and noise in the cabin. On long trips or at high speeds, this can become uncomfortable and distracting for the driver. One solution for this problem is to make your own wind blocker. This device will fasten onto the seat headrest with a pair of adjustable stealth buckles and straps. It can easily be removed and stored in the trunk.

Things You'll Need

  • Clear Plexiglas 17 x 36 x 1/4 inch
  • 1 inch strapping
  • Adjustable stealth buckles
  • Jigsaw
  • Rotary cutting tool
  • File
  • Nut and bolts
  • Snap fastener
  • Lighter
  • Draw the wind block template (see Resources) onto the clear Plexiglas panel with a black marker. Include the 4 holes in the center for the seat straps.

  • Cut along this line with the jigsaw. The strap holes can be cut with the rotary cutting tool.

  • Remove the burrs from the edges with the file. You can also use a propane torch along this edge to create a more finished look. Move quickly with the torch as it can melt the glass.

  • Set the wind blocker in position on your Miata and mark the location on the Plexiglas of two snaps used to secure the convertible top boot. These will be used to secure the bottom of the blocker.

  • Drill two holes in the locations of the markings in step 4. The diameter of the holes should be equal to the diameter of the bolts you purchased to secure the strap.

  • Cut two 2-inch sections of strap and melt the ends with a lighter. Drill a hole in the end of the straps and bolt to the Plexiglas using the nuts and bolts. Secure female snap fasteners of equal size to the Miata's male snap receivers at the bottom of each strap.

  • Cut two sections of strapping long enough to go around the headrests of the Miata and through the holes in the center of the Plexiglass wind blocker.

  • Install both of these straps around the wind blocker holes and fasten the male and female adjustable stealth buckles to each end.
