How to Put Headers on a 3.4 L V6 Camaro

You can increase horsepower on your 1993-1995 Camaro equipped with the 3.4-liter V6 engine by replacing the factory exhaust manifolds with aftermarket headers. Headers allow more air to flow out of the exhaust ports than stock exhaust manifolds. The result is an increase in horsepower and low end torque.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps
  • Socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Drive the Camaro onto a set of front-end ramps to allow more working room under the vehicle. Set the parking brake for added safety.

  • Locate the exhaust manifold flange on the driver's side by crawling under the vehicle. The flange connects to the exhaust down pipe with two bolts. Place a wrench on the one of the bolt heads and a socket on the nut threaded onto that bolt. Remove the nut from the bolt, then pull the bolt free from the manifold flange. Repeat this with the second bolt.

  • Pull down on the down pipe to separate it from the exhaust manifold flange.

  • Remove the nuts that secure the exhaust manifold to the driver's side engine head using a socket and ratchet.

  • Pull the header downward, off the threaded studs on the engine head. Do this from the engine bay, not from under the vehicle.

  • Crawl back under the Camaro and pull the exhaust manifold out through the bottom of the engine bay. Slide the new header up into the engine bay.

  • Remove the metal gasket from the engine head and replace it with a new one, taking care not to bend the gasket -- doing so can cause a gas vapor leak.

  • Slide the header onto the threaded studs on the engine head and secure the header in place using the bolts, socket and ratchet.

  • Secure the down tube to the header flange using the two bolts, two nuts, the socket and the wrench.

  • Complete the process with the passenger side exhaust manifold.
