How to Turn an Ignition Key That is Stuck

While many vehicles are known for their luxury and their features, they can fall prey to a number of the same problems as standard sedans. One such problem can occur when the ignition key fails to turn in your car's ignition cylinder. This problem can be fixed with a variety of quick methods that will allow you to engage the ignition again.

  • Engage the parking brake in your vehicle. This will make sure that the wheels are not active or moving, thus preventing you from turning the key.

  • Turn the steering wheel in both directions to loosen the wheels if they are stuck on one side, which may also stop the car from turning on.

  • Put the car firmly into the "Park" position. If the car is not in park, you will not be able to start the car.

  • Remove the panels around the ignition cylinder to make sure there is nothing preventing the cylinder from turning. You can also insert a wire into the ignition to be sure there is nothing stuck there, which would prevent you from inserting the key all the way.
