How to Build a Remote Switch for a Winch

Winches are a valuable addition to any truck. Most winches have the control switch mounted inside the passenger cabin. This limits the winch operator's view of what is happening at and beyond the winch. The easiest way to solve this problem is to add a remote switch. A remote switch is attached to a 6 to 10 foot long electrical cable. The cable attaches to the winch control relay and allows the operator to control the winch from outside the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Winch control switch
  • 12-gauge red and black wires
  • Small switch box
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Cut a 6- to 10-foot piece of red/black electrical cable. Strip 1/2-inch of insulation off of the ends of each wire inside the cable. Take one end of the cable and connect the red wire to one of the terminals on the switch and connect the black wire to the other terminal on the switch.

  • Push the cable through the switch box and secure the switch to the switch box. Some switches use mounting screws, and others use a bolt and nut arrangement to hold the switch in place.

  • Place the other end of the cable over the winch control relay. Most winches have existing terminals for a remote switch. For those types of relays, connect the red wire to one of the remote terminals and connect the black one to the second remote terminal.
