What Is a Power Distribution Block?

Many times you may have a single power source, such as a car battery, and want to run several machines from it. You will need a power distribution block.

Function

  • A power distribution block acts the same way as a power strip for an electrical outlet. A power source such as a car battery is hooked into everything it needs to be, but if you want to run something else such as a computer or more powerful stereo system, then you will need to hook into the battery using a power distribution block so that you can siphon off electricity from the battery to run other machines.

Benefits

  • Most power distribution blocks have their own set of resistors and fuses so that if there is a power surge or other problem, the fuse will blow and not the equipment you are running.

Warning

  • A power distribution block is connected directly into the power source, whatever it may be, so the power source should be turned off prior to installing the power distribution block. Otherwise, it can lead to serious electrical injuries.
