How to Install an Auto Vent Shade

Auto vent shades are durable polycarbonate panels that partially cover the tops of the car doors, allowing the windows to be lowered to allow in fresh air while keeping rain and other elements out. Auto vent shades are typically mounted within the door's window channels, but may also be mounted directly to the door to allow for a quick and easy installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Auto vent shades
  • Alcohol wipes

Direct Mount Auto Shades

  • Test fit the vent shade to the car's window and door frame. The shade should fit perfectly between the side mirror and the edge of the door. Take note that some models have a contoured form that fits over the mirror. Select another set of vent shades if they do not fit properly.

  • Clean the door frame and mirror base with an alcohol wipe to remove dirt and oil. Remove a small portion of the backing strip from the adhesive pad on the inside of the vent shade. Place the vent shade onto the door frame.

  • Adjust the position of the vent shade as necessary until it is seated properly on top of the door. Check that the shade is aligned between the mirror and the edge of the door.

  • Grasp the loose portion of the backing strip and pull it off the adhesive pad. Press the vent shade into place and apply pressure for at least 30 seconds to set the adhesive. Install any vent shades on the remaining windows.

Window Channel Auto Shades

  • Roll down the car's windows and test fit the vent shade to the car's window frame. The shade should fit within the inner edge of the window frame. Select another set of vent shades if they do not fit properly.

  • Remove a small portion of the backing strip from the vent shade's adhesive pad. Insert the mirror end of the vent shade into the door's window channel.

  • Use a gentle bending motion to flex the middle of the vent shade. Slide the remainder of the vent shade into the window channel. Adjust the vent shade as needed until it is aligned within the window channel.

  • Grasp the loose portion of the backing strip and pull it off the adhesive pad. Press the vent shade upward and into place. Apply pressure for at least 30 seconds to set the adhesive. Install any remaining vent shades on the remaining windows.
