How to Paint With an HVLP Gun

It is probably safe to assume that you want the best possible paint finish with the least amount of work. A high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) paint sprayer is one that distributes a high volume of paint at relatively low pressure. The sprayers use less paint to cover the same size area. The paint is applied in an ultra fine mist, creating a thin and even application of paint. Using an HVLP paint sprayer takes some getting used to. If you haven’t used one before, try it out on some scrap pieces of wood before you attack a real project. It is preferable to use the sprayer outdoors for ventilation.

Things You'll Need

  • HVLP paint sprayer
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Low tack painter’s tape
  • Paint
  • Eye goggles
  • Mask
  • Prep the object to be painted. Paint sprayers can be used to paint furniture, cars, boats and homes. You will need to completely cover anything that you don’t want painted. Use plastic sheeting and low tack painter’s tape to cover nearby items.

  • Mix the paint with paint thinner. Follow the instructions that came with your HVLP paint sprayer. Each type of paint will have different ratios of paint to paint thinner and may require different types of thinner. Thoroughly mix the paint and the thinner. Latex paint should be thinned with water.

  • Fill the canister of the paint sprayer and screw the canister to the sprayer. Plug in the compressor. Set the compressor at 50 psi to start. Set the paint distribution to the middle setting, depending on your sprayer

  • Test the settings on a piece of plywood for coverage. Adjust the psi and the volume of paint that is released until you get the distribution of paint to a level that you are comfortable with and that will cover the walls with a thin, even coat of paint. Too much volume will cause drips while too thin a coat will work but take you much longer than necessary. Always wear a mask and goggles while using an HVLP paint sprayer.

  • Paint your furniture or walls using the paint sprayer. Use a steady back and forth motion with a slight overlap of each pass of the sprayer. Avoid too much overlap as this will cause drips and runs. Paint the entire room. Let the paint dry. Apply a second coat if necessary.
