Programing Instructions for the Toyota Highlander Keyless Entry

The Toyota Highlander comes standard with a keyless entry remote system. This system allows owners to control their engine, pop their trunk, unlock their doors and sound their horn remotely, all from up to a few hundred feet from the car. The remote can be purchased from the dealership and installed, or bought separately from an automotive store and programmed at home once installed.

Setting Up the Programming Sequence

  • You can program up to three remotes for you Toyota Highlander at one time. Grab your three remotes and enter your car in the driver's seat. All doors, windows and the trunk must be closed. Insert your Highlander's key into the ignition.

Pre-Programming Your Remote

  • Leave the key in the ignition for one second, then pull it out. Immediately put the key back in the ignition, then remove it once again. Open your driver's side door, then close it. Do this twice within 40 seconds of removing your key from the ignition, then place your key in the ignition again. Remove it again.

Next, open your car door within 40 seconds again, then close it. Open the door a second time and insert the key into the ignition. With the key in the ignition, close your driver's door.

Programming Sequence

  • Once you have closed your door, turn the key in the ignition two clicks to the right to the "On" position. Leave it at this position for one second, then cycle it back to the left to the "Off" position. After one second, remove the key from the ignition again. At this point, the doors should cycle the locking sequence to indicate that the programming is active.

Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on your first remote to program them. Hold the buttons for three seconds, release them, then press and release either of the buttons. The doors will then lock or unlock to indicate that the programming was successful. Do the same with your next remote to program it into the system. Open your car door once you have finished to close the programming sequence.
