Proper fuel pressure is necessary for an engine's ability to generate power. Fuel pressure which is too low will result in an underpowered engine, while an engine which receives too much fuel can foul the combustion chamber and the spark plugs, as well as waste fuel. A fuel pressure gauge is necessary to monitor the fuel pressure and to adjust the fuel pressure regulator, which is the device which determines the amount of fuel the engine receives.
Place a rag under the rubber hose that connects the fuel filter to the fuel induction system, whether a carburetor or fuel injection system. The rag will act as a catch when this line is cut and fuel escapes the hose.
Cut the fuel line between the fuel filter and the fuel induction system with hose cutting pliers.
Slide one hose clamp over each end of the cut fuel line.
Insert one end of the fuel pressure gauge into one end of the cut fuel line, then slide the hose clamp to the end of the hose where the hose meets the fuel pressure gauge. Tighten the clamp into place by turning the screw on the clamp in a clockwise direction with a screwdriver.
Insert the other end of the fuel pressure gauge into the free end of the cut fuel line, then install and tighten the hose clamp into place as in step 4 to complete the installation.
Remove the rag and allow any fuel on top of the engine to air dry before starting the engine.
