How to Take the Step Pads Off Nerf Bars

If you drive a large pickup truck or sport utility vehicle, there is a good chance you may have a nerf bar. A nerf bar is chrome or aluminum piece of metal that is mounted along the bottom of the door and frame of your vehicle and is used to step up on to get into the vehicle. A pad made of a hard rubber or plastic is centered in the middle of the nerf bar and is placed there so your foot does not slip when you get into the vehicle. There are different nerf bars with different step-up pads, so the removal process may vary depending on the type you have.

  • Park your truck or SUV on a flat, even surface and then engage the emergency brake.

  • Inspect your nerf bar, specifically where the step pad is and how it is mounted. You may have to look underneath the bar itself to see if there is any mounting hardware, like a screw or bolt on the underside of the bar.

  • Use a screwdriver or a socket set to remove any screws or bolts that hold the step pad to the nerf bar from underneath. Once the screws or bolts are removed, pull the step pad up and off. If there are no screws or bolts go on to the next step.

  • Pry a flat head screwdriver underneath the lip of the pad and gently pry it upward. Once it begins to loosen, slip your fingers beneath the lip of the step pad and pull it forcefully straight upward to remove the pad.
