How to Install Ram Trailer Plugs

The Dodge Ram is a product of the Chrysler Group that has been manufactured since 1982. The Ram is a heavy-duty pickup truck well-suited to towing, and several aftermarket equipment manufacturers produce one-piece tow harnesses for Ram pickups. These harnesses fit into factory-installed connection points toward the rear of the Ram, so no soldering, splicing or additional wiring is required. The most common configuration features a round seven-pin plug. Installing a plug is a straightforward project.

Things You'll Need

  • Tow plug with harness
  • Black wire (optional)
  • Blue wire (optional)
  • Plastic zip ties
  • Free the tow connection point from the plastic cable tie holding it to the chassis frame rail toward the rear of the driver's side. This loom is fuse protected by the fuse box under the hood--called the Power Distribution Center, or PDC, by Dodge--and in most Ram models powers all the trailer plugs functions.

  • Consult the owner's manual to confirm the tow connection on your model Ram is fully operational. Some models require that the 10-gauge black wire be connected to the battery's positive terminal. If the brake controller unit is an aftermarket addition, ensure the blue wire in the connection is properly attached to the color-matched wire from the unit.

  • Press the terminal multi-block on the end of the plug's connection harness into the tow connection point; they are fully seated when the small teeth on either side of the harness multi-block click into their receivers on the connection multi-block.

  • Route the plug harness to the center of the Ram's rear quarter, and fix the plug in a convenient position adjacent to the tow package. Use plastic zip ties to fix the plug in place and to secure the harness so that it is not vulnerable to accidental damage.
