How to Clean Mold & Mildew From Convertibles

Convertible tops are typically made from cloth or vinyl materials. Mold and mildew is a serious concern, especially when the top is wet when you fold it down and all the moisture is trapped inside the folds of the material. Mold and mildew can become toxic and cause several kinds of health problems when the spores are inhaled or come in to contact with the skin. There are several products on the market that are used to combat mold and mildew on convertible tops. The key is finding a cleaning product designed for the particular material that your convertible top is made of.

Things You'll Need

  • Mold and mildew convertible top cleaner
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Garden hose
  • Rubber gloves
  • Step stool or step ladder
  • Respiratory mask
  • Secure the top to the car firmly. This will prevent water from running in your car, as well as stretch out the top so that you can get rid of the mold.

  • Put on the rubber gloves and the respiratory mask. This will protect your hands and lungs from making contact with the mold and mildew.

  • Step up on the step stool or step ladder and wet down the surface of the convertible top. This will keep the mold spores from flying off while you're cleaning the top.

  • Spray the cleaner on an area approximately 1-by-1 foot and gently rub in with the microfiber cloth. This will ensure that you cover the entire surface area of the convertible top. Read the cleaner instructions; sometimes cleaners must sit for a few minutes to reach their optimal performance.

  • Continue spraying and scrubbing with the cleaner and microfiber cloth until the entire surface is cleaned.

  • Rinse the whole top with clean water. Allow the top to fully air dry before putting the top down again. Clean the convertible top on a regular basis to prevent further growth of mold and mildew.
