Recommended Oil for a 1998 Saturn SL2

In 1998, the Saturn S-Series came in three variants: the SC coupe, SL sedan and SW wagon. The 1998 SL2 came with a 1.9-liter, DOHC, four-cylinder engine that produced 124 horsepower. General Motors -- the parent company of Saturn at the time -- recommended using just one weight of oil, but also listed two other weights as acceptable alternatives in certain situations.

Recommended Oil

  • General Motors recommended using 5W-30 engine oil in all temperatures, but you could opt for 10W-30, as long as outside temperatures remained above 0 degrees F. If neither 5W-30 or 10W-30 are available, you can use SAE 30 in the SL2's engine, as long as temperatures remain above 40 degrees F. Any oil used in the SL2 must have "SPI Service SG" and Energy Conserving II" on its label.
