Removing the turn signal switch on a Chevrolet Tahoe will require removing the entire multi-switch. The turn signal switch is connected to a switch which has the turn signals, windshield wipers, cruise control and dimmer switch built in. The whole assembly has to come out to remove the turn signal switch. The replacement multi-switch can be purchased at any Chevrolet dealer. A faulty turn signal switch can lead to you receiving a traffic ticket, and can also cause an accident.
Open the hood to access the battery. Disconnect the battery with a socket wrench.
Open the fuse box on the side of the dash by the driver door. Pull the air bag fuse to ensure it does not deploy while accessing the steering column. Wait at least five minutes to ensure the electrical power has drained from the capacitors in the air bag switch.
Press a flat tip screwdriver in to the holes in the back of the steering wheel. This will disengage the springs to release the air bag assembly. Pull the air bag assembly away from the steering wheel. Disconnect the wires once they are revealed.
Remove the parking brake release handle. Pull the plastic clips out by hand to release the "T" handle.
Unscrew the four screws at the bottom edge of the dash panel under the steering wheel cover with a socket wrench. Pull the dash panel away from the dash gently. Pull the vent hose out from under the steering column by hand. It will come straight out. Turn the parking brake cable a quarter turn to release from the release handle. Take the dash panel away from the dash and place it to the side.
Unbolt the screws on the two metal plates that have been revealed by the dash cover panel. Pull the metal plates away from the dash.
Turn the ignition key to start to release the automatic transmission. Tilt the steering wheel all the way down. Remove the upper bezel by pulling it toward you. Disconnect the headlight switch and any other additional switches before removing completely. With the bezel out of the way the truck can be placed back in park.
Unscrew the bolts in the lower steering column cover. There will be two screws to undo. Remove the tilt adjustment button, if equipped, by pulling the lever perpendicular to the steering column. Push the bottom cover toward the dash to get the cover lip out from the steering wheel. Once it is away from the tilt switch, unhook from the top cover to completely remove from the steering column.
Locate the two screw to unscrew the top cover from the steering wheel. The right screw is buried toward the top of the cover, so it may take a minute to locate. Do not remove until you push the cover up and out to access the edge of the cover and get it out from underneath the steering wheel. Press an Allen wrench to the top of the ignition cylinder holder. Turn the key to the "on" position and this will loosen the ignition cylinder. Pull the cylinder out and place to the side. Take the top cover off completely. Place it to the side.
Locate the multi-function switch on the other side of the steering wheel. Trace the wires which will be in a bundle. Cut the tape holding the harness in place to ensure the harness is not obstructed. Follow the wires to disconnect part of it from the hazard flashers. Disconnect the remainder of the harness. The connectors have a quick release lock that will come loose once the sides are released.
Unbolt the top bolt to release the multi-switch with a socket wrench. Pull the switch away from the steering column.
