Instructions on Changing the Oil Filter on a 2005 Ford Expedition

Ford offered the 2005 Expedition, a full-size SUV, with a 4.6 or 5.4-liter engine. Thanks to technology developed in the F-Series truck line, the Expeditions easily last well beyond 150,000 miles when properly maintained. The first key to maintaining the Expedition correctly is to change the oil and oil filter regularly. Ford recommends performing this service at 5,000 miles intervals if you're using semi-synthetic oil or 7,500 miles if you're using full synthetic oil. Always replace the oil and oil filter together.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • 13 mm box wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • New oil filter
  • Rags
  • Funnel
  • 7 Quarts of 5w30 semi-synthetic oil
  • Start the Expedition's engine and let it run for several minutes until the engine temperature gauge begins to move up from the cold mark and then turn the engine off.

  • Open the Expedition's hood. Pull the engine oil dipstick up several inches. Remove the oil filler cap and set it aside -- never place the oil filler cap on top of the battery.

  • Slide under the front end of the Expedition with the drain pan, 13 mm box wrench, oil filter wrench and new oil filter. Place the drain pan directly under the engine oil pan drain plug, located at the bottom of the engine.

  • Remove the engine oil drain plug with the 13 mm box wrench. Wait for the engine oil to drain completely from the engine into the drain pan before reinserting the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug until the head of the plug contacts the oil pan and then turn it one-quarter turn further -- do not over tighten the drain plug.

  • Slide the drain pan over and center it below the oil filter, located beside the side of the oil pan. Remove the oil filter with the oil filter wrench. Look to verify the old oil filter gasket is not stuck on the oil-filter adapter housing.

  • Apply a thin layer of used oil to the new oil filter gasket with your finger to assure the filter seals to the filter adapter housing properly. Tighten the oil filter onto the oil filter adapter housing by hand.

  • Wipe the area clean of any waste oil with a rag. Climb out from under the Expedition with your tools and the drain pan.

  • Place a funnel into the oil filler neck and pour six quarts of oil into the engine. Remove the funnel and reinstall the oil filler cap. Push the dipstick down all the way into the dipstick tube.

  • Start the engine and let it run until the oil pressure gauge moves to the normal range. Shut the engine off and check the oil level by pulling the dipstick out, wiping it off, reinserting it and then pulling it back out once more. Note the oil level and top off as needed until the oil level is near the top of the crosshatched area on the dipstick and inspect for leaks around the filter and drain plug before driving.
