The Toyota Yaris is a Japanese-engineered subcompact that is manufactured as a hatchback and as a sedan. The Yaris comes equipped with optional cruise control. However, if you purchased a Yaris without adding the optional cruise control, you can still install cruise control to your vehicle by yourself with a cruise-control kit in the comfort of your own garage.
Park your Yaris on level ground.
Open the hood of your Yaris and disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench.
Open the driver’s side door to work on the interior of your Yaris and gain access to the airbag and steering wheel.
Remove the airbag by detaching the side panels from the Yaris’ steering wheel, using a trim removal tool. Detach the airbag’s surrounding screws with a T-30 Torx screwdriver, counterclockwise, and then pull out the airbag connectors. Lay the Yaris’ airbag face up in a safe area. To ensure that the airbag does not activate on your Yaris, detach the airbag after 90 seconds or more once the battery is disconnected.
Detach the driver side kick panel from below the dashboard, using a trim removal tool.
Take off the scuff plate from the bottom edge of the driver’s door entrance, using a trim removal tool.
Detach both screws from the lower instrument panel, below the dashboard, using a screwdriver in a counterclockwise motion, and then pull off the instrument panel.
Detach both screws from the steering wheel shroud cover, located by the steering wheel, using a screwdriver in a counterclockwise motion. Pull off the steering wheel shroud cover.
Exit the vehicle and walk to the Yaris’ front end. Open the hood and pull off the black ECM A21connecter and its wire cover located at the passenger’s side firewall of the engine.
Carefully remove the terminal with the purple seal from the black cruise ECM harness, using a cutting tool, and then plug in the black cruise ECM wire to the Pin 40 section on the black cruise ECM A21 connector.
Connect the black cruise ECM wire to the steering wheel’s wiring, found by the terminal with the purple seal.
Pull off the white connector from behind the right area of the Yaris’ steering wheel and pry off the terminal retainer with a screwdriver at the middle of the white connector.
Connect the cruise ECM wire terminal to the white connector’s first pin (Pin 1), also known as the cruise circuit.
Connect the cruise ECM wire terminal to the white connector’s second pin (Pin 2) also known as the cruise ground.
Lock in the terminals securely by pulling them backward with your fingers, then press and lock in the retainer.
Reattach the white connector to the right area assembly at the back of the Yaris’ steering wheel.
Connect the ground wire from the Yaris’ factory harness to its 10 mm ground point bolt, at the bottom edge of the driver’s side door entrance.
Take off the 10 mm bolt with a wrench, place in the cruise ground wire’s ring terminal and tighten the harness with wire ties.
Reattach the Yaris’ airbag and airbag connectors, torque the bolts to 78 inch-pounds, using a torque wrench, and then reattach the side panels from the Yaris’ steering wheel.
Reattach the negative battery cable and then torque its bolt to 3 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.
Reattach the scuff plate at the bottom edge of the driver’s door entrance, reattach the driver’s side kick panel below the dashboard, reattach the lower instrument panel below the dashboard and reattach the steering wheel shroud cover of your Toyota Yaris.
Switch the ignition of your Yaris on and push the “Cruise On-Off” button found by the steering wheel to turn on the cruise control. The instrument panel on your Yaris indicator light will then illuminate.
