Using Magnets to Increase Gas Mileage

As gas prices rise, more and more people are looking for ways to increase their gas mileage. One type of device intended to improve fuel economy is a fuel-line magnet. The people who sell fuel-line magnets claim that they break apart clusters of fuel molecules so that gasoline burns more efficiently. There are many brands of fuel-line magnet, but a pair of magnets and some zip ties can create the same effect. It should be kept in mind, however, that there is so far no scientific evidence for the effectiveness of fuel-line magnets.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 magnets
  • Zip ties
  • Scissors
  • Open the hood of your car and locate the fuel line, a flexible hose that runs from the fuel tank to the engine. Fuel lines are made of either steel or rubber.

  • Arrange the magnets on either side of the fuel line, as close to the engine block as possible.

  • Secure the magnets in place by wrapping the zip ties around them. Depending on the size of the magnets, several zip ties may be required.

  • Cut off the excess ends of the zip ties using scissors.
