How to Replace the Center Bearing on a Montero

When you smell burning from your Montero, and it is not the tires, it may be coming from the vehicle center bearing. After just spending a good chunk of change having the dealership check out your belts, you probably do not want to take it back in to replace the center bearing. Instead, you can replace the equipment yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • U-joint
  • Torque wrench
  • Differential yoke
  • Replacement center bearing
  • Clean rag
  • Wheel blocks
  • Block off the wheels of your car to prevent it from rolling, as it needs to be in neutral.

  • Place the car in neutral, and slide under the vehicle. Clean off the grease and other grime from the driveline of the vehicle.

  • Remove the bolts around both the front and read U-joints on the driveline. This U-joint looks just as it is described. A "U" shaped device with a bolt on each end of the "U," keeping it attached to the underside of the car. Once the bolts are removed slide the joins free. With the U-joints out, you can remove the driveline.

  • Remove the end section of the driveline to expose the center bearing. Take off the rubber coverings from the bearing, and discard of the bearing. Insert the new bearing into the rubber casing, then slide it back into the driveling.

  • Insert the driveline back up into the vehicle, and tighten the U-joints back into position to hold it into place.
