How to Use Wheels Without a Tire Pressure Monitor

Tire pressure monitoring systems are called TPMS units. TPMS is installed in most modern cars, and will be legally required in all new cars by the year 2012. The purpose of this system is to make sure the driver is aware of their tire inflation at any given moment. However, sometimes the TPMS systems can be more trouble than they are worth. Fortunately, the tire pressure monitor can be removed from your wheels and your car will work just fine. Just remember to check your air pressure regularly.

Things You'll Need

  • Valve core removal tool
  • Tire machine
  • 13mm end wrench
  • New rubber valve stem
  • Diagonal cutters
  • Deflate your tire with the valve core removal tool by inserting it into the stem and turning it counterclockwise.

  • Notice that the tire machine has a breaker plate on the side and that it is worked with a pedal on the base of the machine. Roll the tire into the position on the machine where this plate is at the place where the tire and wheel come together. Make sure that the valve stem is on the opposite side from the plate so that you don't crunch it. Press the breaker plate pedal and break the tire bead.

  • Loosen the valve stem on the tire with the 13mm end wrench by turning the nut counterclockwise. Push the bead of the tire down so that you can remove the valve stem. This valve stem is connected to the tire pressure monitor so the whole unit will pull out of the tire and wheel.

  • Install your new rubber valve stem into the hole where the old one came out. Use the diagonal cutters to grasp the stem top and pull the stem up into place.

  • Use the tire machine inflation hose and inflation pedal to inflate the tire to the proper inflation.

  • Repeat all of the above for each tire on the car. Now you are using your wheels without the TPMS.
