How to Replace a Toyota Battery

If you need to change the battery in your Toyota, you will need to consult your owners manual first and buy the correct replacement. The size and terminal orientation needs to be exactly the same. Also, the number of cold cranking amps needs to match. Once you have purchased the battery, installing it can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. Since batteries tend to be heavy, you might need assistance in lifting the old one out.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Ensure that the Toyota is off and engage the parking brake.

  • Open the Toyota's engine compartment and locate the battery. Disconnect the negative cable first, and then disconnect the positive cable.

  • Locate the hold-down clamp securing the battery in the Toyota's engine. Remove the nut and bolt with a socket wrench.

  • Lift the battery out of the engine. You may need help for this, and if help is not available seriously consider buying and using a battery strap.

  • Place the new battery into the engine. Refasten the hold-down clamp's nut and bolt. Reconnect the positive battery cable, and then reconnect the negative battery cable.
