How to Replace a VSS in a 2005 Silverado

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado is a magnetic generator responsible for monitoring rear wheel speed. When the vehicle is moving, the VSS produces an AC voltage with a frequency proportional to the vehicle's speed. This signal is transmitted to the speedometer on the instrument panel, where the vehicle's speed is displayed. The power-train control module also uses the signal to monitor various other transmission and engine functions. Replacing the VSS in a 2005 Silverado is simple and straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set

Removing the VSS

  • Raise the Silverado with a jack and lower it onto jack stands to secure it.

  • Lift the hood and prop it open. Locate the VSS mounted to the side of the transmission case.

  • Pull the connector out of the VSS electrical fitting.

  • Remove the mounting bolt with a socket wrench. Remove the VSS from the side of the transmission case.

Replacing the VSS

  • Install the O-ring supplied with the new VSS. Attach the VSS to the transmission case.

  • Reposition and tighten the mounting bolt with a socket wrench.

  • Push the connector into the VSS electrical fitting. Close the hood.
