How to Open a Locked Car Door on a 1993 Caprice

If you have ever been in a hurry and accidentally locked your keys in the car, you may have wondered what you could do to get them out. Calling for the services of a locksmith can be costly, but with many older cars, such as 1993 Chevrolet Caprice, a locksmith is not necessary. It is possible to open a car's locks using an inexpensive wire coat hanger. This works by sliding the hanger through the car's window then catching the locking mechanism and pulling up to release it. Another option is using a Slim Jim, a tool specifically created to open locked cars.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire coat hanger
  • Slim Jim (optional)

Coat Hanger

  • Unbend the coat hanger so that it is nearly straight, but leave a small loop at the end.

  • Slide the looped end of the hanger between one of the car's windows and its rubber weather stripping.

  • Hook the wire's looped end around the door lock button. Pull the hanger up to release the lock.

Slim Jim

  • Slide the Slim Jim down through the car's passenger window so that it goes into the door.

  • Maneuver the Slim Jim until you feel it catch on a rod inside the door. This rod connects the lock button to the actual lock.

  • Pull up on the Slim Jim to release the door lock.
