How to Reset a Maintenance Required Light in a 2002 Acura RL

The maintenance required light (or "Maint Req'd" as displayed on the instrument cluster) reminds the owner that an oil service and mileage interval service is required. Do not confuse it with a problem with the vehicle, such as the check engine light. The check engine icon illuminates when the powertrain control module detects a problem with a sensor or circuit in the powertrain. Resetting the maintenance required light needs to be done each time the oil is changed to reset the system mileage interval.

  • Ensure the ignition is in the off position. Many other makes and models require having the ignition key on the accessory power position, but not Acuras or Hondas of this year.

  • Press both the upper reset and lower select button with two fingers of one hand (located on the right hand side of the instrument cluster by the temperature gauge). While holding them down, turn the ignition key to the accessory power position, which is the position that illuminates the lights and power accessories in the car with the engine off.

  • Continue to hold the buttons in for at least 10 seconds to allow the system to reset.

  • Start the engine to ensure the "Maint Req'd" light is no longer displayed on the instrument cluster. If it is still illuminated, repeat the procedure.
