How do I Replace 1992 Toyota Camry Fuel Filters?

Checking the fuel filter on your 1992 Toyota Camry should be a part of the annual maintenance of your vehicle. A clogged fuel filter can cause the engine in your Camry to backfire, decrease in power or not start at all. Replacing the fuel filter is a simple procedure and only takes about 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Drip pan
  • Gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Park your Toyota Camry on level ground in a safe location. Apply your parking brake to prevent the car from rolling while you are changing the filter. Open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Locate the fuel filter on your Camry. The fuel filter is mounted to the fender well at the front side of the strut tower. To find the fuel filter, simply look on the driver’s side of the engine for a black cylinder about three inches in diameter attached to a black hose, your fuel line.

  • Place a drain pan directly underneath the fuel filter. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and disconnect the lower flare bolt on the fuel filter. This will relieve the fuel pressure in the fuel system and cause the fuel to drip into your drain pan. Allow all of the fuel to drain.

  • Use an adjustable wrench to remove the banjo bolt and the two metal gaskets on the top of the filter. Discard the metal gaskets; you will replace these with a new set. Keep the banjo bolt and set it aside for later use.

  • Slide the fuel filter from the mounting bracket. With the lines disconnected, you should be able to simply pull the old fuel filter up and out of the mounting bracket.

  • Replace the old fuel filter with a new fuel filter by sliding the new fuel filter into place on the mounting bracket. Replace the banjo bolt and two new gaskets (one above the fitting and one below) on top of the fuel filter. Your new fuel filter should have come with a new set of metal gaskets; use these.

  • Tighten the lower flare bolt on your fuel filter. Remove the drip pan from underneath the fuel filter. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.

  • Start the engine and check the filter for leaks. Tighten fittings as necessary.
