How to Replace the Spark Plugs in a Saturn L-Series

The Saturn L-Series spark plugs provide spark to the engine so that the fuel can burn efficiently. If the plugs are not working properly, then the engine will not fire properly. The Saturn will misfire, and fuel consumption will increase as the Saturn's electronic control unit tries to compensate for the misfire. Replacement spark plugs can be purchased from most auto parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Spark plugs
  • Socket wrench
  • Spark plug socket
  • Socket extension
  • Grab one of the spark plug wires on top of the engine at the end of the wire. There's a small cap that seals tightly to the engine's valve cover. Wiggle the cap back and forth and pull up on it to remove the plug wire.

  • Attach the socket extension to the spark plug socket and lower it into the plug well. Orient the socket until it slides down over the end of the spark plug. The inside of the socket is rubberized, so that it will grab onto the end of the spark plug.

  • Unbolt the spark plug with a socket wrench and pull the plug out of the engine.

  • Insert the new plug into the well and hand tighten with the spark plug socket and socket extension. Once the first few threads are started, tighten the plug the rest of the way with the socket wrench. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal.
