How to Replace Battery Cable Ends

Automobile batteries are one of the key components of any automotive electrical system. Besides serving as the electrical ground for the vehicle, a battery provides the automobile with the electrical energy needed to start the engine.

Most automobile batteries are lead-acid secondary cells. Often, a lead-acid battery will give off sulfuric acid vapors while the battery is being charged. These vapors can corrode the battery terminal connectors, and over time, the battery terminal connector ends must be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement battery terminal connector
  • Battery cable
  • Slip-joint pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Razor blade or utility knife
  • Soldering iron
  • Electronic solder
  • Loosen the battery cable retaining nut, and remove the cable from the battery post. Snip the old battery terminal connector off the battery cable using the wire cutters. Remove approximately ½ inch of insulation from the snipped wire end using the razor or utility knife.

  • Loosen the top bolts on the replacement battery terminal connector. Insert the stripped end of the battery cable into the hole created by loosening the top bolts, and tighten the bolts until the connector holds the cable snugly. Solder the wire to the terminal connector.

  • Loosen the battery terminal retaining nut, and place the battery terminal connector over the battery post. Tighten the nut until the connector holds the battery post snugly.
