How to Reset the ABS Brake Light on a 2000 Dodge Dakota

The ABS light on your 2000 Dodge Dakota comes on when the ABS brakes are not working normally. The sensors on the Dakota are make up of 6 small magnets that are encased in a black plastic housing mounted on the wheel bearing. If the sensor wires break, the system will malfunction. After you've had the ABS system serviced by a professional mechanic (or after you've fixed the problem yourself), the ABS light should automatically reset. If it does not, you need to do a hard reset of the ABS system.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • 10mm Socket
  • Open the hood of your Dodge Dakota and loosen the nut on the cable clamp that is secured to the negative battery terminal.

  • Slide the clamp off of the battery terminal.

  • Wait 15 minutes, then reconnect the battery terminal. This will reset the electronic control unit and all sensors, including the ABS sensors. This will also reset the ABS brake light.
