How to Use an Auto Refrigerant Refill Kit

Every vehicle's air conditioning system can loose its charge, meaning the air it blows out will no longer be as cold. If your vehicle's air conditioning system has lost its charge, it can be an easy fix. Automotive supply stores as well as some big box retailers carry auto refrigerant refill kits, which come with a bottle of refrigerant as well as a hose and gauge system to check pressure levels and fill the AC with more refrigerant.

Things You'll Need

  • Protective gloves
  • Protective eyewear

Recharging the AC

  • Find your car's AC low pressure port, located on the thicker aluminum tube between your car's evaporator and AC compressor. Remove the plastic cap on the low pressure port and set it where it will not get lost or fall into the engine.

  • Start your car's engine and set the air conditioning to the coldest setting. Run your car for 3 minutes to make sure the AC compressor is running all the way. Attach the auto refrigerant refill kit's hose to the low pressure port. Do not force a connection or damage to the low pressure port could occur.

  • Read your car's AC pressure on the auto refrigerant refill kit's gauge. If the air conditioner's pressure is reading low, proceed with refilling.

  • Shake the refill kit's can for over 60 seconds. Attach the can to the kit's refill hose by screwing it on. Make sure the connection is secure.

  • Shake the can every few seconds as you depress the trigger on the refill kit. Check the AC pressure by releasing the trigger frequently to avoid overcharging the system.

  • Remove the refill kit's hose from the low pressure port. Screw the low pressure port's cap securely in place.
