How to Reset the Computer on a 1993 Econoline

The computer on your Ford Econoline van controls important vehicle systems. If this computer fails, your van will not run at all. Controlling the air-to-fuel ratio and emissions are the two most important functions of the Econoline's computer. Occasionally, the Econoline will generate a trouble code. This trouble code indicates that there is a system failure, normally in the emissions system. Once you've found and fixed the problem, you'll need to reset the computer and clear the trouble code(s).

  • Open the fuse panel by pulling down on the fuse cover under the steering column with your fingers.

  • Locate the fuse for the Econoline's computer-called an "ECU." The fuse diagram will list the fuse as an "ECU" fuse.

  • Turn the ignition on but do not crank the engine.

  • Pull the fuse for the ECU using the fuse pullers in the fuse panel.

  • Wait three minutes and replace the fuse, then shut off the ignition. Start the van and verify that the "service engine" light has gone off. This will indicate that the computer has been reset.
