How to Install a Tow Bar on a Ford Ranger

A tow bar is a device that is attached to the front of a vehicle for the purpose of being towed by a larger vehicle such as an RV. The tow bar is triangular and is affixed to the frame on a Ford Ranger; it attaches to the ball mount of a trailer hitch on the towing vehicle. Tow bars that are compatible with the Ford Ranger include models manufactured by Democo, Blue Ox and Roadmaster.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Socket or adjustable wrench
  • Park the Ranger on a flat surface, and apply the parking brake.

  • Measure the size of the frame at the front of the Ranger, using a tape measure or other measurement instrument, as well as the width of the tow bar.

  • Use a pencil to mark the vehicle frame where the bolt holes will be drilled. These marks should be centered on the frame based on the widths of the frame and tow bar.

  • Clamp the tow bar to the vehicle frame and align the bar to your drill hole markings.

  • Drill the holes in the frame, using the position of the tow bar as a template.

  • Insert the mounting bolts and tighten them with a wrench.

  • Attach the safety cable and safety chains; these should be included with the tow bar.
