You may not think about the windshield wipers on your Dodge Caravan very often, but they are important components. They will wear down over time, and bad wipers will not only perform worse but can also damage the windshield. If you live in a rainy climate, this can happen more frequently and cause more problems. Repair the wipers by replacing the blades. Remember that on many vehicles there also is a rear windshield wiper to inspect and repair.
Inspect the wiper and blade on a regular basis--at least every six months, and especially before any time of year that is seasonally rainy in your area. Check the wipers for cracked or worn-out blades, loose components or any other damage.
Tighten any bolts, nuts and other fasteners that feel loose on the wipers, as these can loosen from operation. The main bolt attaching the wiper to the arm often requires a flat-head screwdriver. Check your wipers for the size and type of wrench/screwdriver needed for your wipers' fasteners.
Clean the wiper blades using a soft rag and a mild detergent solution. This will get rid of road film that builds up over time and affects the efficiency of the wiper blades.
Lift the wiper arm assembly away and clear from the window glass if the blades need replacing. Push the release lever on the blade holder, pull the blade away from the wiper's crossbar and slide it out of the hook at the end of the wiper to remove it. Remove both blades from the front windshield.
Measure one wiper blade or take it to an auto supply shop or other retailer if you're not sure of the exact replacement size. On most recent Caravans, the wipers use 18 inch blades.
Attach the blades to the wipers by sliding them in place on the arms. Listen for an audible click to signal that the blades are securely connected to the arm.
