How to Reset Service Alerts in a BMW

The service alerts in your BMW come on whenever regular maintenance is required. Once the maintenance is done, however, the service alerts need to be cleared. The on-board diagnostic computer stores a code that tells the computer that there is service required. To clear the service alerts, you need to reset the codes. For that, a special OBD reset tool is required which is available from your BMW dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • OBD reset tool
  • Open the fuse panel cover under your BMW's steering column.

  • Plug the electrical connector from the diagnostic reset tool into the fuse panel. There is a large circular plug coming out of the OBD tool that plugs into a large, circular input on the fuse panel.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "On" position and let the OBD tool run. The service alerts should go out once the codes are cleared.
