With the average price of an oil change ranging between $30 and $40, learning how to change your own oil can save you most of that money, only requiring that you pay for the oil and filter. The 2005 Dodge Durango has three engine options, each with different oil specifications. Here are instructions on how to change the oil with any engine option.
Set the wheel ramps in front of the the vehicle and drive it on them to make underneath access easier. The Durango has sufficient space to change the oil without raising the vehicle, but the ramps will make the process easier.
Remove the oil filter from the Durango and set it upside down in the drain pan to discharge. Oil filters are usually easily removed with your hand, but you may want to use a towel to get a good grip.
Place the drain pan underneath the drain plug on the engine oil pan. Use the socket wrench to remove the drain plug, turning it counterclockwise. Be careful when the plug comes out; oil will gush out initially.
Allow the engine to drain for a minimum of 10 minutes. Replace the drain plug and attach the new oil filter by hand.
Lower the vehicle from the wheel ramps. Add engine oil through the valve cover oil cap using a funnel; 3.7-liter engines require 5 qt., 4.7-liter engines 6 qt. and 5.7-liter engines 7 qt. Do not overfill the engine with oil.
