How to Repair a Radiator Fan

The radiator fan is an important part of a car's cooling system. It is responsible for either pushing or pulling air over the radiator to keep it cool. Most cars use an electric fan for this purpose. If the fan malfunctions or needs to be repaired, replacing the fan is a very simple process.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Multitester
  • Cleaning rag
  • Turn off the car and let it cool.

  • The cooling radiator fan is located on the radiator, usually either in front or in back. Remove the 6 mm bolts with a ratchet. Usually there are two on top and one or two below.

  • Lift the fan out gently until you can see the wire connector on the bottom of the fan.

  • Reach in and disconnect the electrical wire from the fan.

  • Pull the fan out completely. If there is any gunk on the fan, such as tar, that is keeping the blades from spinning, clean it off. If that isn't the problem, reconnect the fan.

  • Jump the fan with 12 volts. If it works with a jump, than check the fuses with a multitester and replace any bad ones. If the fan doesn't move, replace with a new fan.

  • Attach the repaired fan or a new one to the electrical connector.

  • Bolt the new fan into place.
