How to Install Snow Chains

In most cases, a set of quality snow tires and careful driving will be enough to get you through a snowstorm on the roadways. There are times, however, whether due to incline grade of the road or law enforcement regulations, snow chains will be required to safely continue onward with your winter driving journey.

Things You'll Need

  • Snow chains
  • Wrench (if chain type utilizes fastening nuts)
  • Park vehicle in a safe, level area with adequate space in front of and behind vehicle (10-15 feet). Turn off engine and apply emergency brakes.

  • Clear snow from around the tires that chains will be placed over (front tires for FWD, rear tires for RWD). Note that local laws may require chains on all four tires as opposed to two.

  • Lay chains out in front of (for FWD) or behind (for RWD) tires that will be fitted with chains, with the first portion of chain in contact with tire where the rubber meets the road. If your chains have studs, make sure that this side of the chain faces downward toward the road surface.

  • Disengage emergency brakes and slowly drive vehicle (forward or backwards depending on drive train) over chains. Have an accompanying passenger guide you to center the tire over the chain. Turn engine off and re-engage emergency brakes.

  • Pull the chain ends over the top of the tire from each side, allowing a little slack in the chain.

  • Fasten the closing mechanism from one side of the chain-end to a link on the opposite side of the chain.

  • Secure any rubber/plastic/elastic/metal tensioner cords across the outside of the tire by diagonally attaching the hooks to chain links, or tighten any fastening nuts with a wrench.

  • Disengage emergency brakes and carefully drive a short distance, being sure to not exceed the chain manufacturer's recommended speed limit, usually 20-30 mph.

  • Listen for any knocking or banging sounds, indicating improperly tightened chains.

  • Stop vehicle in a safe area (regardless of whether or not banging/knocking occurred), turn off engine, engage emergency brake and check chain tightness on each tire. Upon safe inspection, continue winter journey at chain manufacturer's recommended speed.
