How to Clean a KLR Carburetor

Carburetors in KLR motorcycles have the distinct tendency of becoming easily clogged with sludge and debris. As a result, it is important to be able to easily clean the carburetor and allow fuel from the tank to flow freely to the motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard tool kit
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Rags
  • Air compressor
  • Remove the carburetor from the motorcycle and place it on the ground on a clean rag. (For complete directions on removing the carburetor from your KLR, consult the owner's manual.)

  • Remove the cap of the carburetor by removing the screws in the top. Make sure to gently pull the cap away from the seal to prevent damaging the seal.

  • Turn the carburetor over and thump it a few times to knock any large debris loose.

  • Spray the entire carburetor out with carburetor cleaner. This cleaner will eat up much of the sludge inside and will help remove any metallic particles.

  • Wipe out the carburetor thoroughly with a rag.

  • Place a blower tip on the end of your air compressor. Use this to blow out all the openings and valves on the carburetor.

  • Place the top back on the carburetor. Make sure the seal is lined up as perfectly as possible. Retighten all of the screws.
