How to Replace a Tie Rod End in a Nissan Pathfinder

When your Nissan Pathfinder makes a clicking noise, or the wheels don't track straight any more, it may be a sign that your tie rod ends need replacing. This is especially true if your vehicle's performance doesn't improve after an alignment. Fortunately, this is a task that the amateur mechanic can do.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug nut wrench
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Wrench
  • Pliers
  • Grease
  • New tie rod ends
  • Socket wrench
  • Buy the appropriate tie rod ends for your Pathfinder's model year. The part is the same whether you have two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The part for model years 1996 to 2003 is the same. Moog brand comes with new nuts and a cotter pin.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on both front wheels, but do not remove them. Make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead. Jack up the car, place jack stands on both sides, and then remove the front wheels.

  • Use a socket wrench to loosen the end lock nut that secures the tie rod. Keep the tie rod from turning by holding it with a wrench.

  • Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle with a puller, and then slip the tie rod from the spindle.

  • Mark the position of the tie rod so you can get the new one in approximately the same place. Unscrew it from the threaded portion of the tie rod.

  • Replace the tie rod end, screwing it to the mark you drew. Slip the tie rod back on the spindle, tighten the castle nut and insert the cotter pin. Refasten the lock nut on the tie rod end.

  • Apply a layer of grease on the tie rod assembly to preserve and protect it and replace the wheel.
