When trying to keep your VW Jetta in proper working condition it is necessary to perform regular maintenance, including routine maintenance is flushing the radiator. If an owner doesn't flush the radiator every other year, debris can accumulate causing the coolant system to fail. Flushing the radiator is relatively simple and does not require an in-depth knowledge of auto mechanics.
Park the VW Jetta in a level area and set the parking brake. Then, open the hood and touch the radiator. If the radiator is cool to the touch, proceed to Step 2. If not, wait until it cools and then continue.
Turn the radiator cap one turn and pause a few seconds to relieve any internal pressure. Then, remove the radiator cap completely.
Position a bucket with at least a two-gallon capacity underneath the radiator and directly beneath the drain plug. The drain plug should be on the bottom front of the driver's side on the radiator of the VW Jetta.
Remove the drain plug with a socket wrench and let the coolant drain completely into the bucket. Be sure to pour the old coolant into a sealable container and dispose of it properly. Put the bucket back under the drain opening.
Close the drain plug and fill the radiator with distilled water. Then, open the drain plug to allow the water to drain from the radiator. Keep repeating this procedure until the flush is free of debris. You will need approximately 3 gallons of distilled water.
Dispose of the radiator flush and put the drain plug back into place on the VW Jetta.
Fill the radiator with fresh coolant until it is within an inch of the lip of the radiator. The manufacturer recommends that you use G12 plus coolant.
Start the VW Jetta and turn on the heater. Allow the cooling fan to turn on two times and then turn the Jetta off. Check the coolant level and top it off if necessary. Put the radiator cap back on and close the hood.
