How to Replace the Battery in a Chevy Corvette

Since 1953, the Chevy Corvette has been the premier sports car in the General Motors lineup. Since its 50th anniversary the designers of the 'Vette have spent considerable time improving the ergonomics in the cockpit. The most difficult batteries to replace are the C4 1984 to 1996 models.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • 7 mm wrench
  • 10 mm wrench
  • Battery terminal puller
  • Wire brush
  • Gloves
  • New battery
  • Find the battery under the hood near the passenger side front wheel. It is squeezed into a very small space.

  • Disconnect the ground wire first, and then the positive and negative cable connections.

  • Look under the bottom side of the rocker panel to remove the two bolts that hold the battery cover in place. Use a 7mm wrench for this. Take your 10mm wrench to remove the last two bolts holding on the battery cover.

  • Slide your hand down inside the panel to reach the battery hold-down bolt. Some corvette owners prefer to take off the entire rocker panel since the fit is so tight. Be careful with this move since you could easily crack the panel.

  • Use the wire brush to clean the surface that holds the battery. Clean the insides of the connector cables with a pointed wire brush. Check surrounding wires for wear.

  • Install new battery. Use a stock Corvette replacement battery to slide right in place. If you choose to use an Optima batter or other dry cell, which are very popular with 'Vette owners, you will need to modify the battery shelf slightly to get it to fit. Simply cut off the excess plastic holders in the tray.
