Nissan Altima Transmission Problems

A transmission system in a Nissan Altima connects to the engine's crankshaft and adapts the Altima engine's output to the drive wheels via the shifting of gear ratios. Nissan Altima transmission systems can develop problems that you can resolved via some basic troubleshooting techniques.

Difficulty Shifting

  • You may encounter difficulty or failure when shifting a Nissan Altima if the transmission fluid is of poor grade or is contaminated. Replace the transmission fluid with high-grade fluid, and seal the transmission pan with silicone to prevent leakage.

Overheating

  • A Nissan Altima transmission can overheat because of clogged fluid cooler lines, which in turn can lead to transmission failure. Inspect the cooler lines for obstructions, and clear them out to restore the transmission back to normal operating temperatures.

Slipping Gears

  • Slipping gears in a Nissan Altima transmission may be caused by internal clutch failure, a bad pan gasket or leakage caused by a loose filler tube. Inspect the tube for looseness, and secure it as necessary, and also check the gasket and clutch for signs of damage or wear and replace them as needed.
