What Are the Problems With a Scion XD?

The XD is a four doorm hatchback automobile, built by Scion, a subsidiary of Toyota. Some 2008 and 2009 Scion XD owners report mechanical problems with braking, engines check engine light systems.

Braking Problem

  • The port for the braking system vacuum can get blocked by freezing condensation. The result of this condition is partial loss of braking power. The source of the condensation is the positive crankcase ventilation (PVC) system. Toyota issued a recall addressing this problem in August 2009. The 2008 and 2009 models in the upper Midwestern states and New England areas were affected.

Oil Consumption

  • Many owners of 2008 and 2009 XD models reported that the 1.8-liter engine excessively consumes oil. The engine control module (ECM) of the Scion XD may need updated software. The ECM is a computer which regulates the engine's ignition, fuel injection and emission systems.

Check Engine Light

  • The transmission fluid sensor can cause the the check engine light to illuminate. Whenever this condition occurs, a 0713 code will be stored in the car's powertrain control module (PCM). A revised internal transmission harness corrects the problem.
