Why Is My BMW 325E Overheating?

The BMW 325E was part of the E30 generation of the 3 Series. The 325E is powered by a 2.5-liter, straight-six engine. This is a well-engineered, reliable car if properly maintained. One issue that the 325E can suffer from is overheating.

Insufficient Coolant

  • If the radiator does not enough coolant in it, the engine will not be cooled properly and can overheat. This will usually be indicated by a coolant light on the dash. Check the coolant level.

Leak in the Cooling System

  • A leak in the cooling system can cause the coolant level to drop and the engine to overheat. Check the radiator hoses and cooling components, such as the water pump and radiator, for leaks while the car is running.

Bad Water Pump

  • The water pump is the component that is responsible for circulating water throughout the cooling system. If the pump fails or is failing, it will not circulate the coolant properly, causing overheating.

Clogged or Bad Radiator

  • Many BMWs have problems with their radiators. If the small tubes in the radiator that carry coolant become damaged or clogged, the coolant will not circulate properly.

Bad Thermostat

  • The thermostat is the device that reads the temperature of the coolant and controls the fan speed. If the thermostat fails or is not opening at the proper time, the cooling fan will not turn on and cool the coolant in the radiator.
