How to Remove Hood Struts

Hood struts are used to raise the hood of a car and keep it in the upright position to allow unrestricted access to the engine compartment. These are basically smaller versions of the struts that cars use. And just like car struts, hood struts will wear out if they are used enough. If that happens, there are some temporary fixes you can use until you have the time to remove and replace the hood struts.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Open the hood by pulling on the hood release located inside the car. Prop open the hood with a baseball bat, golf club or sturdy walking stick to keep the hood from crashing down on your head.

  • Inspect the ends of the hood struts to determine how they are fastened. They will probably be fastened to the hood on end to the hood and to the sheet metal in the engine bay on the other end.

  • Disconnect the end of the hood strut where it fastens to the hood. Most struts will be held in place with a clip of some sort. You might be able to press on a tab in middle of the clip with your fingers to release it, or you might have to press on it with a screwdriver to release it. Others might have a small cotter pin holding the hood strut in place. You can also use a pair of pliers to remove the clip or pin.

  • Installation of the new hood struts by following the previous steps in reverse order.
